Install apticron for Ubuntu update notifications #vestacp #ubuntu

One of the few shortcomings of VestaCP is the lack of notification and control of system updates. It’s a very small detail, but one that can become a huge security risk if you take a hands-off approach to your server. Who wants to or even remembers to check their VPS regularly for updates? Fortunately there’s a small utility that you can easily install on Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 that will send you email notifications of updates along with changelogs, and remind you to login and run it. It’s simple to setup and use.

apt-get update
apt-get install apticron

Once it’s installed, run:

nano /etc/apticron/apticron.conf

And change this line to your email address:

EMAIL=”root”

Save and exit:

CTRL+O
CTRL+X

Done. Now your system will check daily for updates and you’ll get an email of the changelogs if there are pending updates.
