I’ve done it. I’ve taken the Soylent plunge. I’ve opted for a 3 shake a day, 1200 kcal diet. I’m doing this to lose weight and alleviate stomach issues related to IBS. Why Soylent? Well, I’ve been following it off and on for quite some time, before it even became a product. I liked the idea of future foods, or complete foods, or whatever term you want to call it. Nutritionally complete meals that take little to no time to prepare and little to no thought.
But of all the future foods, why Soylent? After doing some research, I decided to stick with Soylent rather than a competitor because a) It’s a pioneer in this arena. b) It’s plant based, so no dairy (which makes my IBS go into a fury). c) Some other competitors are made with flax seed, which just makes my gut hurt. d) Mixed and flavored shakes, so a laziness win. e) A really active and enthusiastic Reddit community.
Day 1 – Sunday, October 8, 2017 – 240.2 lbs
My Cacao Soylent arrived on Friday. My Cafe Variety Pack is on back order at Amazon. So, I do the only thing I can think of, and that’s have coffee after my breakfast. My initial reaction to the first sip … better than I expected! Took me all of about 2 minutes to destroy the bottle. After that I made myself my normal cup of 8 O’Clock coffee with 2.5 tsp of sugar. Had 2 bottles of water to help keep me not feeling hungry through church. A second Cacao for lunch. Followed by another 8 O’Clock coffee with sugar. Another bottle of water between meals. A Cacao for dinner. And another water for the evening. Honestly, not really feeling all that hungry all day, so it worked out pretty well for me.
Since my Cafe sampler was on backorder, I ordered a case of Cafe Coffiest. Arrived in the afternoon. I put it in the refrigerator so I could pack it on Monday.
Day 2 – Monday, October 9
Today I may have to stay at work late, so I packed two Cafe Coffiest and one Cacao. Started drinking the Cafe Coffiest on the way to work, finished at my desk. Initially, on first sip, I was almost disgusted. The flavor was off-putting. I knew after this I had 11 more bottles, so I needed to give it a go. I kept drinking it, and by the end of the bottle I was enjoying the flavor. We shall see how I feel about the second bottle when lunch time rolls around. Made myself four cups of unsweetened decaffeinated tea to hold me over between meals.
Developing a small headache around 11. Not all that hungry. Not sure if it’s related to lack of food, no coffee, or unrelated. Took two Ibruprofen.
Coworker at next desk just heated up food. Smells great. Now my stomach is growling. I could have my second bottle now, but I’d rather save it. Continuing to work on my tea.
Cafe Coffiest definitely tasted better the second bottle. I’ll probably stick to drinking this one. So I do have at least two flavors to drink regularly. Still working on my tea. Definitely feeling hungrier today. Stomach is rumbling a bit. I hope that’s hunger and not something else.
Made it through until the evening. Definitely have an upset stomach from the change in diet (yes, this means I’ve been in the bathroom a bit). Definitely doing better than I expected quitting solid food cold turkey. I’m feeling pretty good otherwise. Going to have my Cacao, then water should be able to sustain me for the rest of the night.
Day 3 – October 10, 2017
Started this morning with very little sleep. Definitely feeling hungry. Drank a Cafe Coffiest for breakfast. Followed it up with a cup of coffee. Haven’t hit the water very hard today. That’s probably why I’m feeling so hungry. I’ll have to force myself to drink some water so I don’t have my lunch too early. I feel like my nose is becoming extra sensitive, as I can smell when anyone in the office has food. Also, unsubscribed from Checkers and Rally’s email list. Sad day.
I put off having lunch (does everyone that switches have a hard time not saying eating?) until around 12:30. Still having a ravenous day. Drank my second Cafe Coffiest of the day. Still hungry. Trying to hold myself over with more water. This is by far the roughest day I’ve had.
Was still pretty hungry when dinner rolled around. Had a Cacao. Finishing the evening with water.
My Cafe Variety Pack arrived. Tomorrow, new flavors!
Day 4 – October 11, 2017
Does anyone else feel like they have the nastiest mouth and breath? After searching Reddit, it seems somewhat common when using Soylent for weight loss. Well, I’m going to have to hit the mouth wash harder and maybe get a bottle for work. Either way, my mouth is always feeling dirty right now, even directly after brushing.
This morning I grabbed a Cafe Vanilla and a Cafe Chai. Just finished the Cafe Vanilla for breakfast. It was … bland. Plain. Not bad. But if this one tastes plain, I wonder what on earth the regular Soylent tastes like. I think I’m going to be finding out soon, as I’m considering making a powder purchase. This morning the hunger isn’t really there, so I hope I stay this way.
I had 3 cups of water to get me through my morning, and a cup of coffee. I need to cut out the sugar in the coffee, but I haven’t been able to yet. Now I’m onto Cafe Chai. Honestly, the first taste made me cringe. Second taste did, too, but at least it didn’t catch me off guard. So glad I grabbed a sampler, as I won’t keep drinking this flavor. I mean, it’s great having something with actual flavor again, but this just isn’t doing it for me.
I was seriously, SERIOUSLY craving real food by dinner. I broke down and ate a salad. 3 cups organic spring mix, 6 oz chicken breast, and 2 tbsp Greek dressing. I will say that the salad wasn’t as filling as Soylent. It was actually disappointing.
Day 5 – October 12, 2017
Since I’ve tried every flavor that I have, and described in detail, I won’t be going into specifics. I’ve decided to portion my Soylent out today to smaller, more frequent servings to help curb hunger. I had half a bottle of Cafe Vanilla at 8am, the second half at 10am. Then I had Cafe Coffiest at 12pm and 2:30pm. Finished the day of with a Cacao at 5:30pm and 8pm. I definitely felt less hungry today than any other day.
Also, funky smelling urine? Definitely.
Day 6 – October 13, 2017
Yesterday’s smaller portions more frequently was definitely a success. I’m going to try to maintain a similar schedule today with a Cafe Coffiest first, a Cacao second, and the same for third meal. Two coworkers are enjoying Hot Pockets this morning. They smell amazing. I’m not sure I’ve ever had such a huge craving for a Hot Pocket.
Day 7 – October 14, 2017 – 235.8 lbs
Today we were heading to a craft festival and knew we’d be out all day. Fortunately, packing for me was easy. I grabbed two Cafe Coffiest and one Cacao while heading out the door. I still managed to split it into 6 snacks rather than 3 meals. I was barely tempted by any of the foods there, except for the pit beef and the deep fried desserts.
I stuck to my guns and finished off week 1 with what I’d consider a victory. Every meal Soylent, with the exception of one salad. I feel better now than on any diet I’ve ever been on. My stomach is still a bit upset, but I definitely spend less time in the bathroom than on solids. That being said, diarrhea is prevalent with this extreme change in diet. Hopefully my system will normalize a bit. Still dealing with a crazy amount of bad breath. Brushing and flossing a lot more than ever just to not feel nasty. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my progress here. I’m extremely satisfied with Soylent, even if some of the flavors aren’t the best. And next week I plan on adding exercise. Let’s see if that happens!
